Dr. Norah Matthies
Leading Orthopedic Surgeon in Toronto
Dr. Matthies is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Toronto Western Hospital, with specialized expertise in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder. She serves as the head orthopaedic surgeon for the National Ballet of Canada, where she supports elite performers with a clinical focus on patellar instability and knee ligament reconstruction, including care for pediatric and adolescent patients.
Originally from Alberta, Dr. Matthies earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Lethbridge and her medical degree from the University of Alberta. She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Toronto in 2018, followed by two subspecialty fellowships: one in sports medicine and arthroscopy through the University of Toronto Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Program, and another in lower limb reconstruction and trauma at St. Michael’s Hospital. Prior to her current role, she spent three and a half years as a staff orthopaedic surgeon at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Matthies recently completed a Master of Science in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) through the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include surgical quality improvement, operating room sustainability, qualitative research, and promoting diversity within orthopaedics. Through both her clinical and academic work, Dr. Matthies is committed to advancing the field of orthopaedic surgery.
